Hard drive problem - possible corrupted file system

a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer if this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. if this screen appears again, follow these steps: disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. check your hard disk drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. technical information: *** STOP: 0x00000024 (0x001902F8, 0xF7CB1704, 0xF7CB1404, 0xF74BF411) *** ntfs.sys - Address F74BF411 base at F7451000, DateStamp 3b7dc5d0

I get the above message in a blue screen. This blue screen appears just before Windows XP Pro is fully loaded and about to send me to the login page.

I'm afriad my Windows won't boot at all when this hard drive is connected. Only way to boot is to disconnect it. I don't think it's possible for this to be fixed but if anyone has a way they think may fix it, please leave a reply as I do have some important data on that hard drive I would like to retrieve. Since I cannot get into Windows I cannot run Chkdsk or format it via windows.

There is a operating system on this hard drive but when I try using the Windows XP Repair function (boot from CD) I get this error message again. I may try to do a format and another full install if need be. My only solution would be to format this drive through DOS or something. Would it be possible to format in dos? I would like to use it as a secondary hard drive now and don't want to install a OS to it. If I can just straight out format it and use it again that would be great. Steps to how I can do it would be much apprechiated.

P.S: the system with this problem is LANboy (link in my sig). It's the IBM 40 giger hard drive. I bought the Maxtor 80 gig and that's got the OS on it now, so I don't want to use this 40 gig as primary anymore, just want to format and use it as storage.

Can you boot into SAFE MODE (F8)?

If it does, remove any antivirus programs that may be installed.

Also, a bad RAM Module(s) will cause the error.
You may want to try reseating or moving to another slot.

no i cannot boot into safe mode either with that hard drive. i know it's not the ram because i now have XP installed to the Maxtor 80 gig hard drive and it runs just fine.

there's nothing wrong with the computer itself by the looks of it. it only doesn't boot with that hard drive. what i need now is a method ito format it. i created a startup boot floppy which works and loads DOS @ startup. problem is ( format C: ) is an unrecognised command 🙁

oh and i actually tried to run chkdsk in DOS, that program is not allowed to be executed in DOS mode would ya believe it. LOL

Set your BIOS bootup settings to start boot from your CD-ROM drive ... load your Windows XP CD and let it load ... choose "Repair" and it might repair itself or it might send you to someting that looks like DOS ... type in "Help" and a whole list of things shows up that you can choose ... i don't remember the exact wordings but you should run the scan disk option and run the fix boot one ... this should fix your problem ...

nope, that didn't work. selecting repair or just plain old setup XP will result in the blue screen containing the already posted error. basically i can't do anything.

any other way to try and format it? i really am outta ideas and kinda given up on repairing it. just to format it would be useful enough.

The other way to format your hard drive is to put into your friends PC and load your operating system from there ... if the blue screens comes up even before you goto repair wizard from the CD ... then it might be a hardware issue ... try checking your memory and make sure they are connected right and in the right order ... i would just leave one in on the first slot ...

I only have 1 stick of Generic 512 DDR in the LANboy PC mentioned in my sig. The hard drive prevents windows XP from loading and doesn't work for anything. What do u mean load from my friend's PC? And why would I do such a thing when I have 3 computers at my disposal...?

Isn't there some way to format it without booting from CD? e.g. use a startup disk and type something? I tried format C: in DOS (loaded from a startup disk) but it says it's not a valid command...

I don't even think it's your OS anymore ... because your PC is not suppose to crash when you boot from the CD ... it's either a motherboard issue or a hardware issue ... what i meant earlier is that take your hard drive and put it into one of your working PC's (that means you have to take the current one in it out and put the one you want to reformat in it's place) ... load the WIndows XP CD and reformat the whole drive and when everything is finished put it back in your old machine ... so basically you are just swapping hard drives only for reformatting purposes ...
