HARD DRIVE PROBLEM ON 66MHZ MACHINE

Hey guys. I got my windows 98Se issue fixed last week. Now, on to something harder. The machine I'm working with has a 730MB WD 2700 Caviar hard drive in it. I wanted more space so i got a 20GB Maxtor hard drive. I know I won't be able to use all the space but that's besides the point. My main issue is that I can't get it to boot. When I boot up (I took out the 730MB hard drive) I keep getting an error message saying that the drive isn't recognized. The computer asks me to put in the 'Boot diskette.' When I do so nothing happens. Neither the Windows boot diskette not the diskette that came with the hard drive. How can I get the computer to recognize the hard drive? It's an UDMA/100 drive. Can I change the settings in the BIOS (such as the 'User configure' for Drive D)? If so, how many cylinders and sectors can I put? I believe that I put the cables in the right place (and the power is on) but nothing seems to be happening. Please help me. Thanks

It sounds to me like you have too much money on your hands, but in any case... Have you tried booting with a boot disk and then fdisking the drive, then rebooting and installing an OS via floppy. What i do on my machine that's similar to yours, is I have the dos install disks so anytime I redo everything I just put that disk in and dos installs right off the bat

the best solution as I see it is to get a ata66/100 pci controller card & attach the new hdd to it to see the full capacity of the hdd & run it at its maximum performance!
