Hard Drive Problem -> HD died in new PC

I am helping a friend troubleshoot a PC he recently built. The PC worked fine for about 2 weeks, then it refused it boot up giving the no boot disk found error. The HD is still recognized in the BIOS, yet when attempting to reinstall Windows I get all sorts of write errors. Strangely, it appears to go through the partioning and formatting fine.

Upon physical examination of the drive, it appears the user plugged in BOTH the Serial ATA and the molex power connectors.

Could this have damaged the drive?

It is a Western Digital 250gig.

Hi There,

It's possible that the drive has been overvolted and damaged yes. Do you have any way of running SMART disgnostics on the drive from another machine?

My familiarity with SMART extends so far as it being a diagnostic program for HD's. Other than that I wouldn't know what to look for.

It wouldn't a problem to install this drive in another machine and run those diagnostics, what should I look for within it?

If you could copy the SMART results here we can have a look. I may not be online again until tomorrow though if that gives you enough time.
