Hard drive partitions--new drive--Windows XP

I just bought a 80GB WD hard drive for installation in my son's PC. I will be installing Windows XP Pro on the drive and wanted to get some opinions about how/whether to partition the drive. I was thinking about creating a C drive(10 GB) for installation of the operating system and such and placing everything else on the D drive which would be ~70 GB. I was going to do this to avoid the necessity of wiping the entire disk clean if the OS got screwed up for any reason. Any thoughts or experiences with this?

in addition, have you considered making another small partition soley for ghosting the working OS in case the OS got screwed up? would save alot of time/aggro!
