sorry, let me rephrase. the os i'm using is Win98se. I don't remember what type of partitions (primary, logical, or extended) i'm using, but I remember PM giving me the option of installing win2kpro on 2 different types of partitions. One type required the os to be installed on reboot or the computer would not boot into any OS-->this is what really gave me a hassle since the cdrom wasn't being detected & it wouldn't go into dos since i was trying to install win2kpro on nothing..so i used a win98se boot disk in hopes of installing win2kpro on the partition, i kept getting some type of vfat init error. any suggestions?

If you have all your OS on 1st partition and personal files dl's, and programs on the 2nd and you format the OS partition and have a backup of the registry, will the programs still work after you load up the registry on the new OS?
