hard drive or Mb problem

Ok so I get home, computer won't boot up past the initial BIOS screen. When it starts looking for IDE doesn't list my HD. It won't even let me go into the BIOS to mess with settings. So I try everything and finally unplug the power to the HD and the bios goes to the bios menu screen, etc.

I built this computer fairly recently. Like two months ago.

No weird clicking sounds, etc from the HD either. I really hope it didnt crash.

Any ideas?

make sure the cabling is specifically made for your ide drive...

for example: my drives were ata 100, and i put modded ata 133 cables on and it caused heaps of problems...

so unless they are factory cables... this could be an issue?

Its pretty unlikelyto be a cabling problem based upon it was a working system with a sudden failure mode but I would none the less check the serial cable and even replace it if you have a spare. Do you have another boot device such as a bootable floppy? Will it boot to a bootable floppy or even perhaps a bootable CD? It is not at all uncommon for a drive to fail in the park position after powering off. I would just for grins unplug all devices in the system except for your boot drive just to insure something else isnt stepping on its feet. Also insure that all your power rails have power on them. Dont get radical and just start replacing stuff until you have exahusted checking the cheap and ez stuff.

Well here's what we discovered. Hooked up the SATA drive to my roomates computer. It did the same thing. It would freeze at the BIOS booting screen. The BIOS would be checking for IDE devices, etc and then it would just stop.

Any ideas?
