So I'm pretty confused right now. I've been running an OC'd E7200/GB P35-DS3L/4GB RAM/320GB WD HD system for around 2 years now without issue.
About 3 weeks ago, I started getting lots of random "Access denied" errors when trying to empty my Recycle Bin. I tried booting into Safe Mode, deleting the Recycle Bin, etc. but nothing worked. Eventually I did a CHKDSK /F, errors were found and (supposedly) fixed. The Recycle Bin emptied afterwards like nothing was wrong. A week later, the same error came back. "Access denied" when trying to empty the Recycle Bin. CHKDSK on boot and the problem was solved.
The error has started to happen a bunch this past week, so I've been in diagnostic mode. I ran WD Diag Utils and it passed the quick test. Then, it passed the extended test. S.M.A.R.T. says everything is ok! Ran CHKDSK again and it still said there were errors. Ran CHKDSK from the Recovery Console, and again it found and fixed errors. Reformatted my HD, and right now (minutes after the XP install finished) CHKDSK is returning errors.
I've replaced the SATA cord, and moved the HD to a different SATA port (I've gone through all 4 now). CHKDSK is still telling me there's stuff that needs to be fixed. If it matters, I had my comp running Prime95 for 12 hours and then Memtest+ for 12 hours, no errors returned on either of those tests.
So I haven't heard any clicking noises, but is this hard drive about to bite the dust? Are there anymore tests you'd run before buying a new HD?
Edit - HD is partitioned into two parts; C: has the OS/Programs as well as all of the CHKDSK errors, and D: is general storage but with no CHKDSK errors.
