Hard drive OEM warranty?? Do you need to keep receipt?

I'm thinking about getting a Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ST3250824AS 250GB SATAII. I hear from a lot of people who just bought new OEM that when they check the S/N from Seagate warranty, it shows only 3year, not 5 as Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 advertise...
So I'm little concerned...

Do you need to a proof of purchase/receipt to get five year warranty? even though it shows only 3 years....

How does this work??

How Long Does The Coverage Last? Seagate warranty periods are 1 year, 2 years or 5 years from the documented date of purchase, depending on the type of product and where it was purchased: The warranty period is 5 years for internal disc drives purchased anywhere worldwide (i.e., products requiring incorporation within the chassis of a computer - normally labeled "Internal Hard Drive Upgrade Kit"). For all other products purchased in a European Union Member State, the warranty period is 2 years. Otherwise, the warranty period is 1 year.

OEM warranties often vary from that of retail. I'm not familiar with Seagate's policy. However, I would certainly suggest keeping the receipt, regardless of the time interval.

how many people really keep a hdd for 5yrs? i hear/ read so many people talk about retail versus oem warranties, when actually in a couple of years from now 1tb hdd's will be the norm and people will be asking how to recover files from their old 250gigger...lol...

btw, just like Seekermeister said, it's best to keep all your receipts if you can...

jack, i understand that and not only keep a folder in my Outlook, but i keep each invoice/packing slip that comes in the package...i was just trying to make a point that we oftimes worry about the replacement or repair time on Retail vs OEM components, but we don't spend the same kinda time when we decide to upgrade a part that's still inside of it's warranty period, seems we want best of both worlds.
