Hard Drive not spinning on boot and beeping

I guy I brought my drive to said it wasn't spinning, and a beeping (musical, that would repeate) would omit from the drive maybe 5 times then stop.


How can I get it to start spinning again? Thanks.
 
I've been having the same problem with a Maxtor hard drive as well...it gives off slight clicking noises and then goes "beet beet". Won't spin up. When it happens usually I can get it to spin up with a few hard reboots, but sometimes it get's really bad and won't start with 10 or more reboots. So far it seems just unplugging the IDE and power cable and replugging them back in get's it to spin up more consistently...at least for a while.
 
That's strange....have you tried putting in a different hard drive? If that doesn't help I'd say it's a problem with your system...if it does help the maxtor is to blame.
 
Bad news..........

The melodic beeping is a built-in warning that the drive is toast. I had two Maxtor DiamondMax-9 Plus 120 GB drives do this just recently after boot up. These particular droves drives live without climate control at less than 60 degrees in the winter, sometimes operating at under 50 degrees. A friend of mine in the industry informed me the bearing life is REDUCED at very cold temps because of contraction and all, not to mention condensation.

He suggested a quick tap with a rubber mallet, and pray. If the drive spins up, then you can remove the data and then RMA. There is no way to repair the drive yourself, as it's likely mechanical instead of electronic. Mine spun up and I got the data off of it, but it would not reboot after that.
 
FWIW, i've never had good luck with Maxtor drives, but the company was always good about replacing them.
 
I've never had a Maxtor drive fail until now. The funny thing is that neither of the two failed drives was EVER OC'ed...

The 2 older 6LO40J2 drives that I have have been run up to 50 Mhz PCI for extended periods, and they are just fine. Go figure. The ones that I babied died while the ones that were abused are still running strong.
