First of all this is a continuation of this thread http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=32&threadid=1978472&enterthread=y
but its mostly a new issue so im starting a new topic. No need to read last topic

Randomly the computer would not boot up, as soon as the xp flash screen loads it will restart and last know config and safe modes do not work. I tried to go do a repair install but xp setup only sees my ATA HD and not the SATA HD with the xp install on it. I thought the drive or cables might be bad, but the BIOS and a knoppix live CD work fine with the drive, i was even playing songs off it from knoppix. It seems that its not a hardware issue with the PC not starting and a repair install should work. Im using Asrock 939 dual SATA 2. I dont believe i need to use the F6 install feature for raid drivers if the HD is not in raid, Correct? What should i do next.

This may not be your problem, but it appears that your motherboard has one SATA II connector and two SATA I connectors. If so (and assuming your HD is SATA II), then you might check to be sure it is plugged into the SATA II connector. Otherwise, you might be having trouble with the HD recognizing need for backward compatibility on the SATA I connection. Just a guess...sorry if it's wrong.

OK i have given up on xp repair what is the best way to backup now. I put the HD in another xp computer but it will not let me navigate past the root directory (i can only see the program files documents & settings folders, but cant open them. ON knoppix CD i can navigate through all the files and play them but cant transfer them to another ATA hard drive. Any recommendations on backing up now? Thanks

You need to assign "ownership" of the subfolders within the \Documents and Settings folder to the account that you're using on the "rescue" computer.

Blanket instructions, and here's a reference pic :camera: to help:

1) restart the "rescue" computer in Safe Mode. Why? Because this lets you get at the necessary Security & Permissions stuff.

2) go to the old hard drive's Documents and Settings folder and right-click the subfolder you need to get into.

3) choose Properties from the right-click menu, then the Security tab. The Security & Permissions panel opens.

4) click the Advanced button and the Advanced panel opens. Go to the Owner tab.

5) on the Owner tab, check the box that includes the subfolders, then give Ownership to the user account that you're logged on with on the "rescue" computer.

6) restart the "rescue" computer in normal mode.

On WinXP Professional, another way to get to the Security & Permissions is to go to Tools > Folder Options > View tab, scroll down to the bottom, and disable Simple File Sharing.

Hope that helps :)
