Hard drive not being recognized

I've had a series of problems with my computer that I traced to a bad motherboard. I just installed a replacement of the same board (ABit BF6), but am now having a couple of problems that I wasn't before. The main one is that Win 98 won't recognize my slave drive (Quantam Fireball Plus 30 Gig) and my plextor cd rw. When I reboot, they are listed in the post, but when I get to windows, my slave drive doesn't show up at all, and my cd-rw comes up as my d: drive, but it keeps saying device is not ready. Both of them are jumpered and plugged in properly (data cables and power). My main drive is a DiamondMax 20 GB, should that be helpful info.

Thanks.

That could happen if MBR gets corrupted on the HD. Boot into DOS and see if fdisk /mbr will fix it. If the FAT's corrupted as well, you'll have to reformat. If you've got data you want to retrieve, you could try one of the file recovery programs.

Hey, that sounds like good advice. Except that I don't know what MBR is.

What file recovery programs are out there? Do any of them have trial versions available?

Thanks for your help.

You might want to make sure your master is set to master, WITH slave present, if it has such a jumper, if your adding a slave device to that ide ribbon.
