hard drive noise

My hard drive has been getting progressively louder over time... i'm just wondering if this is normal or I should start backing up files. Its a samsung - I managed to kill my Quantum 30gig in a brilliant display of sparcs, a 12V arc, glowing ICs, and smoke. Dont ask. For some reason, the retailer replaced it under warranty even though it was pretty clearly my fault. the replacement was samsung

it started out nearly silent (samsung uses the silence of their drives as their main marketing point) but has since gotten louder, and yesterday I noticed it over my music and fans. it makes a somewhat high-pitched noise, not grinding. its only a little quieter than some old western digital 7200rpm drives that are loud. it does not do any abnormal clicking. should I be concerned?

I'll say this much, it's always a good idea to back up your stuff every now and then.. but you probably know that 🙂

yeah... but how does one easily back up 11 gig? 🙁
wow... 11 gig used within two weeks of a reformat. when you can do that, you KNOW your net connection is fast 😀

As a general rule, you should always keep a backup of your really important stuff. I keep my critical data off-site in two different locations. 🙂

As far as the noise goes... I'd backup my files just to be safe if I were you... but it could just be the drive is becoming "broken in" over time and that this is normal. You may wanna email Samsung.
