Woke up hung over this morning and fired up the PC... all I hear are clicking and popping noises coming from the HD.

It's a WD 60g I've had for 4-5 years... is this baby going to die on me or what? These are pretty loud clicks and pops. Can't be good... how long can I expect to be able to use this HD? Thanks in advance.

edit: pic of old & new WDs linked up - gotta love these asus cables, nice & sturdy :D

There's no way anyone could tell how long before it dies. If it still works back up everything you want on it, pronto!

I think it will kick the bucket soon. Back up every thing you have and get a new HD. 5 years is not bad for a HD.

Like a "(silence) .... *thwack* *thwock* ...." repeating loop?

That's the Click of Death. Back up everything. Freeze it if you gotta.

Run DLG on it, let it fix it if possible, then back up anything important. Purchase a new drive and toss the old one in the can.

Well, there were no bad sectors in the scan, but I'm perusing purchase options as we speak anyway. Not limited to TD... :D

So I can assume the drive is failing mechanically? I guess 5 years is pretty darn good for an old WD drive.

Any recommendations on HDs in the 100-160 gig range would be greatly appreciated. Thx again all.

hmm i'd check inside the case and make sure it's the drive. it can be a cable getting in the way of a case fan.

lemme know what you think of this SATA drive

I've got the drive you've linked to and it's great. I've had no problems with it but I've only had it for about a month. I'd suggest you shop around because for the past few weeks I've seen big rebates on this drive...maybe check hot deals section.

Well looks like I might wimp out and just go with another WD. Just don't feel like waiting until this one dies out completely, I'd like to image it so I won't have to reinstall etc.

Probably a 120gb WD from Best Buy... $100 CDN after rebates... not the best but, it'll do in a pinch.

Hmm...I had a similar problem to yours except mine went away after 2 days. Should I be worried about mine? I haven't heard a pop or any clicks for several months...

Well, you know what - I have that 60gb HD yanked out in favour of the newer 120gb, but as the first responder said - there's no telling how long it will last. Sure as sh!t, when I got the new drive hooked up in a master / slave config, the old one was quiet as ever - I guess it saw the new one and got scared. ;) Hard to say... my decision to buy a new one was also based on the 4-5 yr shelf life which the old drive is about to exceed...
