I installed a Maxtor 60 GB Hardrive, and noticed that its full capacity has not been utilized. It's partitioned into four areas w/ about 2 GB each. Why has this happened and how can I resolve it?

Four Partitions were created. Three with 1.99 GB each and 1 with 1.84 GB. That's nowhere near the 60 GB max, so I am wondering why this occurred.

what kind of machine is this running on? I've read that some older motherboards do not recognise patitions(?) over 2GB. So, maybe thats the problem. I'm not too sure about that, as i havent experienced it myself.

One thing you could do is install Powerquest Partitionmagic, which is really helpful if you are not too sure about partioning and stuff like that. It shows the drives unformatted space as well.

I guess thats my 2 bits worth.....

they were created by the Maxtor Software included w/ the Hard Drive, it handles formatting and partitioning of the drive.

You seem to have encountered the old chipset and/or bios limitations of that era.

Go to the Maxtor site, read and download Maxblast Plus 2.

As stated, you need at least Win95B.

Like people are saying, it's probably a bios issue which older machines exhibit where they aren't able to identify a hd larger than 8gigs (while some are not able to identify a drive larger than 32gigs). You have to flash the bios if you want the drive to read the correct size.
