Hard Drive making strange noises...

Sometimes my hard drive sounds like it suddenly stops with a loud click, then clicks and starts spinning again.

Strange.. should I be worried? SMART says it's fine.

it IS on its way out... just a guess, its a WD hdd right? that's the heads trying to park themselves while running. eventually when this happens your machine will start crashing, or become unstable when it happens and then will get to the point where it just does it all the time....

dew.

I had the same problem on a 10GB Western Digital... died about a month later. Back that thing up and replace it before it's too late.

If its a maxtor or IBM drive its possible that it is set on one of its power saving modes, which caues the heads to load/unload during idle operation. This can make a 'funny' clicking noise. I used to think my IBM drives were really broken, but they were on powersave and I learned about head load/unload technology and it all made sense. I figured out how to put them into full power mode and everything was fine. maybe thats all it is. WD doesnt have fluid dynamic bearings...much less head load/unload!! so if thats what you have....RMA it now. Seagate doesnt use it either. Just maxtor and IBM. good luck
