Hi. My Maxtor 30GB harddrive just recently broke so I sent it for replacement since it was still in warranty. I received the replacement harddrive yesterday and proceeded to install Windows 2000 on it. I noticed that the harddrive makes a clicking noise when it is accessed. This is a factory refurbished drive from Maxtor that I received as replacement.

I also noticed that the harddrive tends to be a whole lot slower--it feels like it's accessing the CD-ROM, with a huge spin up time. Opera, my browser usually started in 1 second before--now, I have to wait 4 seconds before the harddrive starts reading. I'm not using any kind of power saving feature/hdd turn off.

Is this something I can fix? Should I worry about it? The performance downgraded is really annoying, but if I send it in I have to pay another $10 in shipping ...

Do any of you know of any programs that benchmark harddrive performance, especially spin up time. I belive that the clicking is caused by misalligned heads but I could be wrong.

Thanks,

Haha, a wave file ... It's just an abnormal clicking, not a Windows98 booting up kind of clicking.

I guess I have to RMA it and pay another $10? Can I convince Maxtor to pay for it?

Yes. Maxtor has allways been good at listening.
