Hard drive light flashes and noise

HI All

I just built a new machine with windows xp pro. The hard drive light flashes. Whenever the light flashes I get what sounds like a cheap fan noise. When you first turn on the computer and the OS loads. If you wait a few minutes why would that light keep flashing? Is this a hard drive problem?
When you're surfin the web should the light go on?

maybe someone else here can help you, i'm not sure i understand what you are asking. but i can say, that anything going on within windows, whether it be in the background or visible, is going to make the hard drive light flash. about all i can do for you. maybe someone else will post. sorry DALE

You have indexing service running. Turn it off its not needed.

Whats indexing service and how do u shut it off??

Doesnt the indexing service make the computer faster?
