Hard Drive keeps spinning up, freezes computer

I have a 200GB Western Digital SATA hard drive. Every minute or so when I use my computer, it freezes for a couple of seconds, and then I hear the hard drive spin up again, and then it functions normally for about a minute. I have resinstalled windows XP Pro, but the problem still occurs. I have the SI3112 SATA controller on my Asus A7N8X Deluxe mobo. I'm wondering if it could be the hard drive itself, but I wanted to check if anyone would be able to offer some suggestions.

Could it be a faulty drive? Is it the controller? Power?

Hi,

I suggest going to Western Digitals website and donwloading their drive diagnostic utility. Run it and see if it finds any problem. Failing that try tunring off all power management for your computer.
