Hard Drive issue

Hello all,

I've been attemping to put a new ATA Hard Drive into my system. I'm running an ASUS A78NX Deluxe Motherboard, a SATA hard drive, and a couple of CD-ROMs which boot up as secondary. I have no more ports for IDE plugs.

Basically, this new HD freezes the system. I plug it in (I use the second, or middle plug [it's gray, not black] on the IDE wire, hopefully I'm articulating that correctly) and put the jumper on the "master" pin. Power is put in as well, of course. The system boots, gets to the RAM test, and then freezes.

What am I doing wrong here? The CD-Rom (DVD-RW) appears as a slave device. Is the HD bad? I hope not.

not supposed to do that..if jumpered as Master it has to be at the end of the cable..jumpered as Slave/CS for the position you are attempting to put it in(also some harddrives have special jumper settings for different configs..)..same with the CDRom..

Hmmm....should I just get an IDE card?

Don't think so. Just set your jumpers correctly. As scapsilicon is saying, you have a conflict because you've connected the HD as "slave' on the cable, but then you've set it's the junper to "master". Straigten this out and all s/b fine.

So either: 1) connect your HD to the black (end of cable) connector; or
2) change the jumper to slave on the HD
