Hard Drive - Intermittent Disappearance

Hi guys,

So my problem is that my 2nd hard drive (no Windows on it) seems to "unplug" itself after I leave my computer on for some time. Sometimes it goes away within minutes of booting while other times it takes several hours.

I opened up my case and everything seemed normal. No cables were loose and temperature was as expected.

After it "disappears," I can go into my device manager and scan for hardware changes and it will appear again. Restarting my computer also works. Despite this quick fix, I'm concerned that this may be the first signs of a much bigger problem 🙁

My hard drive is a Western Digital Caviar Blue 400 GB (WD4000AAJS). I can't find any support for it from the WD website. I've had it for approximately two years.

Any thoughts?

How old and what wattage is the power supply unit?
Also did you run a SMART check, something like SpeedFan, on the drive?

Also, replace the data cable and try a different Molex/power cable.

Do you have this HD set to spool down and turn off for power saving purposes?
