Hard drive interchangable?

Ok, my fiancee is planning on coming to the US. Visiting with son in the near future and later on perminantly if we can get it all worked out in the coming months.

Her son has a UK sold Xbox 360 without a hard drive. We intend on buying an US made Xbox 360 for use here in the US with a hard drive.

My question is, if they want to remove the hard drive and take it back to the UK, will it work fine on the UK Xbox?

I think that the only thing region coded are the games. I don't believe the hard drives differ from one country to another, but then again I can't be 100% positive.

The only way I see this being an issue is if you're playing online with a US Gamertag/XBL account and then take it overseas and try to connect.

But then one could simply delete the profile and re-create an account in the UK right?

Saved games, among other things, are usually connected to a specific gamer tag.

Which means that if you delete a North American profile and start a UK profile, you'll lose achievement data, scores, save games, stats, etc. You'll be starting over from scratch in pretty much every way.

You might wanna contact MS to get further clarification, but I'm sure the region is coded in based on where the console itself is from... as in... even if you don't sign up for online services the gamertag is still listed as being a US name. Trying to connect to the UK XBL with a US gamertag is unlikely to work. Like I said though, you should contact MS and get a straight answer from them, if they don't already have something about it on their website.

The version of XBL you connect to is dependent on the address you supply and not where the Xbox is. For example I have a Japanese GT to get some things that are exclusive to Japan on the marketplace (a few demos and such). In America when I sign into that GT I get the JP Marketplace and whatnot.

But you do need separate gamertags for the US vs. JP content, right? If so, how do things work with using MS points and such? Do you need to buy JP points to get paid-for JP content?

Well, ultimately, the main thing is that the HD could be used on the UK xbox. Basically my fiancee is buying a US xbox for her son to pay her in America. However, they can take the hard drive back to the UK and benefit from at least part of the expense while they are over there until they imigrate (assuming that is approved in a timely fashion etc).

So the other issues don't sound like deal breakers. It is helpful to understand how the hard drive saves work and what the options are so I'm reading the comments with interest.

So if I'm following you, you don't have access to the US marketplace, only the JP one, right? So if tech enters a UK address, he will have access to the UK marketplace. That way the kid will have the same stuff as his blokes when he returns to the UK.

I wouldn't count on it. It is ridiculously hard to legally enter this country; my fiance and her family know this first hand. It may be a lot easier from the UK though.

To address your post, we will go the process legally and "timely" is described to be as still quite a while, usually 8 months or more.
