Hard Drive Integrity Checker?

Is there a hard drive integrity checker that I can use on my Mac? Recently there has been some files disappearing (Interestingly in iTunes), and I'm not so sure of the extent of this problem yet. Perhaps it may have been an iTunes upgrade bug, but I'm not so sure.

What can I do to check the integrity of the hard drive and of all the files on my computer (to see if they are corrupt or not?)

Thanks in advance.

try this...

1.Click on the "Go" option from the top Finder toolbar and click on the "Applications" option from the drop-down menu. In the Applications folder, click on the Utilities folder.

2. Double-click on the Disk Utility icon and the Disk Utility pop-up screen will appear. Select the name of the drive that you believe is experiencing the issues on the left side of the pop-up screen.

3. Click on the "Info" button to view information about the hard drive you selected. Check the S.M.A.R.T. status. If it reads "Verified," your hard drive isn't having issues, and the problems you're experiencing may be related to another issue. If the status reads "Failing," your hard drive is having major problems and is on the verge of shutting down.

4. Click out of the Info box and go back to the Disk Utility pop-up box. Click on the "Repair Disk Permissions" button to have Disk Utility check and repair your hard drive. If you still have problems, perform a Safe Boot: Restart your computer, and when it starts up, hold the Shift key to go into Safe Mode. Restart your computer one more time, but this time start it normally. If the problems still exist, continue to Step 5.

5. Speak with an Apple expert to determine what is wrong with your hard drive (see Resources for contact information). If this can't be accomplished over the phone or through the online chat, the expert will likely suggest that you send your hard drive to Apple Hardware Support or take it to your local Apple store.

6 Before you decide to purchase a new hard drive or replace it under warranty, consider programs that can repair your hard drive, diagnose the problem or recover data. The second link in Resources recommends several of these utilities.
