I dunno if this is a dumb question but i bought a new abit ip35-e board w/ only 1 ide port and i have a old promise ultra 100 card lying around, i tried installing the optical drive first to the promise ultra100 pci card and it detects it but wont boot from cd so my question is if i put my ide hard drives on the ultra 100 pci slots, are they slower than the on board 1 ide slot or is it the same?

The Ultra 100 is probably technically slower than the "ATA 133/100/66" controller onboard the Abit. But you're not going to see any speed difference in the real world.

Use whatever works--that is the first step. Worry about what is faster later.

LoL... But you seem to have forgotten that you're here at the AT forums!

The rules for the AT forums are... MAX SPEED First... stability a distant second. :p

Negative. :) I run RAID and partition like hell, but doing shit uselessly is exactly that--fucking useless.

ok well if the pci controller card is slower i can just buy a new sata hard drive but y waste good ide hd lying around... so i assume theres not much of a speed difference w/ ultra 100 pci ide controller vs onbard ide. correct? that way i can just stick my opticals on the onboard which does boot from cd

Hey FMC,
. Using language like that can earn you a vacation - this is a public forum...

MooGoo,
. Getting your machine to boot from CD is simply a matter of setting the boot order in your BIOS setup. You have to put CD ahead of Hard disk in the boot order or it will never happen. I also put floppy ahead of CD when needed - I generally put floppy last so no time is wasted trying to boot from it. So the machine will look to the floppy first, CD second and when nothing is found there, it boots from the hard drive. Generally the CD should be set to Master (jumper on the back) if you intend to boot from it. It may work another way, but that's the convention.

You will not notice a difference in speed between the controller or the onboard port. Though you may be able to see a difference using synthetic benchmarks. Strangely enough, you may find that the controller card will be faster than the integrated port using benchmarks. The integrated port is just there because it has to be, while potential customers need to be convinced to spend good money on an add-on card so more time is spent in optimizing the chipset for the card. I don't think there is an PATA hard drive that can tax either port, while a very few SATA drives are just now nearing the "magic" 100MB/sec mark. I think only the latest Seagate 15k SCSI drives with perp. recording have significantly exceeded the "magic" mark on their outer tracks.

Connect one optical and one IDE HDD to the onboard IDE interface. Connect the rest to the PCI add IDE card. This way you can boot from CD and still has the primary drive on the onboard IDE interface. Although, I doubt you will be able to tell the difference in speed between the add in and the onboard IDE interfaces.

His motherboard does not have Native IDE its a 3rd party controler slaped on the motherboard, you should not see a performance difference between the promise card and the onboard IDE for the number of devices you are using. to get the system to boot from CD on the add in card you need to select it in the bios.
