Hey FMC,

MooGoo,
. Getting your machine to boot from CD is simply a matter of setting the boot order in your BIOS setup. You have to put CD ahead of Hard disk in the boot order or it will never happen. I also put floppy ahead of CD when needed - I generally put floppy last so no time is wasted trying to boot from it. So the machine will look to the floppy first, CD second and when nothing is found there, it boots from the hard drive. Generally the CD should be set to Master (jumper on the back) if you intend to boot from it. It may work another way, but that's the convention.
You will not notice a difference in speed between the controller or the onboard port. Though you may be able to see a difference using synthetic benchmarks. Strangely enough, you may find that the controller card will be faster than the integrated port using benchmarks. The integrated port is just there because it has to be, while potential customers need to be convinced to spend good money on an add-on card so more time is spent in optimizing the chipset for the card. I don't think there is an PATA hard drive that can tax either port, while a very few SATA drives are just now nearing the "magic" 100MB/sec mark. I think only the latest Seagate 15k SCSI drives with perp. recording have significantly exceeded the "magic" mark on their outer tracks.
