What's the deal with those hard drive heatsink/fan things? Do they really work, and what are the benefits? Any performance enhancement?

good for 15k rpm scsi drives:p more or less useless for any other hd's, only an option if your case is really poorly venitlated andn you can't mod the case. tiny fans are inefficient.

there's some zalman job, looks very poor - just a few heatpipes with no fins.

Its actually a pretty decent one if you've got a little airflow. I use it on my 10k Rpm.

Actually active cooling is a good way to extend the working life of any drive, but it is really necessary only for the 15k drives and some earlier 10k drives.
. It's preferable to have a case that already has fan mount(s) in front of the HD mounts, e.g. the Antec SLK3700ABR or the Compucase DA series (nearly identical and very well designed) etc.
