Hard drive has no letter?

Hey guys,

I installed a hard drive on my friend's computer a while ago, and it refuses to show up with a letter. Checking device manager, you can see that the hardware is connected, but no volume is assigned. Is there a way to format or assign this hard drive a letter, or did I get some defect?

start- controll pannel - admin tools - computer management - storage - disk managemet

just give it a letter, you might also need to format it

Windows XP is great, but it doesn't automatically format drives when you add them.
Not yet anyway.

I have the same problem, but the commands when you right click on the drive are not highlighted. Any comments on this. I can not find anyone with an answer yet on this problem. The only thing you can access when you right-click are delete partition and the help menu..

Any help is appreciated.

is the HD empty?
does it have a letter or no?

if it has a letter, you should be able to see it in indows explorer and you can format it from there

you can also try deleteing the partition, and reformating it

i had issues alnong these lines a while ago, i ended up haveing to use Partition Magic to get it to work

No the HD is not empty. It does not show up in Explorer. The only way you can see the drive is through control panel, disk manager. It shows the drive as active (but with no drive letter assigned) and healthy. This is where I was right-clicking. I don't want to format because of the data I need to get off the drive first. It was working fine a few days ago, and then all kinds of weird things happened.

umm HD might be fusked thats no good

I hope not....................I have a few things to check when I get home.......If anything good happens I will post the results.....this is a good one indeed. Bottom line is, make sure you do backups.........
