Man, I hate the enter button!
In mid-December, my computer cracked up on me. I had not installed any new hardware or software, just doing normal stuff. When I would start it up, I would get through the BIOS and when it would try to read the partition table, the computer would just stop. Nothing would happen. I didn't want to deal with it then as finals were going on, so I decided to wait till I got back from Winter Break and install XP, just assuming it was just some simple quirk or another. So I come back and install XP. I have a couple of problems with the installation but I eventually get it. I use it for a couple hours and just keep it on overnight. The next day when I come back from class, my computer is stuck at the spot after the comp goes through the BIOS, so while I was gone, something had happened and it automatically restarted. Now I'm mad. Maybe it was something incompatible with XP and my hardware. So I decide to put 2000 back on. I install 2000 and after a couple of hours, the same problem comes up. Except it happens as I'm at the computer. I get a BSOD with some error. I'm not exactly sure. Over the next week, I install 2000 at least 5 times to see the same problem happen. With the BSOD's I get different errors. A few that I've gotten are:
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
KERNAL_DATA_INPAGEERROR
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
So, I'm not really sure what's up. A couple other quirks with this is that sometimes, I'm able to use the recovery console to chkdsk /r, fixboot, and fixmbr and suddenly its ok for a couple more hours. Another thing is that sometimes when I reinstall windows, it'll say that the disk is corrupted or it can't find it, but sometimes it can find it. Sometimes it also won't boot up from the CD or floppy, even after I've changed the startup options in the BIOS. So am I dealing with a bad HD, bad MOBO, or both, or nothing? My idea right now is that the HD is bad at the first few sectors where the partition table and MBR are, but I'm not sure. I'm thinking of putting a brand new HD in there to check. Please help! Thanks!
