hard drive goin bad?

I have a 60 gig 7200RPM WD drive..

I ran the diagnostics on both my main and this drive...

problem... when trying to copy music from one drive to another (backup) it isn't going steady at all (usually at 3MB per second, now going from 440KB a second to 1.4MB a second)

also, I was trying to burn a cd w/music on that drive and it just almost locked my computer up...

verdict?

I think it's going bad (it's a refurbished one anyways because the original one I had died)

damnit 🙁

I don't know what to do. I'm just trying to get everythign I need to backed up in case the unthinkable happens yet again (weekly backups are a blessing!)

Ok, this is even weirder... transfer rates suck in the music folder (with 23.7 gigs of data) however all things were normally transfering other stuff from the drive...

ugh, I don't know what to think now 🙁

I'll have to see if it's dead in the morning or not. I'm not really worried as everything is backed up anyways (I mean everything) but still...

well I backed everything up and now I'm currently low level formatting the hard drive...

I did the extended test on the Data Lifeguard Diagnostics, and it said no errors found there either.

So hopefully after low level formatting it I can get the damn thing working right once again. If not I don't know what I'm going to do 🙁

if the low level format and bad sector check dont work then you may have to send it back

i've had really bad luck with western digitals

also, make sure your cable and ide controller are ok by sticking another drive in that spot if possible

my main drive is using the same cable and the same ide controller...

I've had NO problems prior to this (none with XP, none with Nero) so I have to believe either something went bad or else it's just acting goofy..

I'll let you know if things got straightened out with low level formatting or not...

Well at the moment it's still formatting...

This is gonna take a while, then hopefully things work better or else I"m gonna be sad 🙁

No, I'm a dumbass... come to find out it was a combo of problems...

my nic card was acting up (stupid POS) and my burner was somehow set to pio mode..

so I fixed both problems and wallah. 5 f'n hours of work for a 10 minute job.

D'oh. Never forget to check the simple things first...

I have learned that the hard way (like you just did!) many times... 😱

Oh well, better to waste time than to have to RMA a drive...

I already had most stuff backed up so that wasn't an issue had the drive went to piss...
