Hard Drive for Video Editing?

Generally speaking, would it be better (if you had two hard drives to work with) to read and write back to one "drive" (two drives in RAID 0), or to read from one drive, and write to another. Both drives would be SATA II.

Usual hard drive setup in the video world is not to use Raid but to use use two drives so you read from one and write to the other. End of message.

What capture card and software will you be using for your editing?

I'm going to be capturing with using a pci-e Firewire card. Haven't decided on which software. I want to find something that is pretty advanced, and take my time and learn it.

On a side note, I am going to buy a Hauppauge ATSC/NTSC tuner card, and will set up some HD-DVR system (maybe SageTV or something). So I should also consider what drive set up will work best for this as well.

Currently I just own two 160gb WD's. I plan on using them in RAID 1 for OS and all final projects, pictures, movies, etc. And then either do:

A) 1 * 320gb + 1 * 320gb SATAII as a read drive and a write drive for editing and dvr

B) 2 * 320gb in RAID 0 as one drive for read/write/dvr

I suppose the best would be to combine A and B, and do 2 * 320gb (RAID 0) + 2*320gb (RAID 0) for a high speed read drive and a high speed write drive...but I dont' know if I want to purchase 4 drives right now.

So is A) or B) better? Any other general ideas?

The better situation is C: (whatever), E: possibly RAID 0 pair, F: possibly R0 pair; G: backup for both E and F.

E: would be your capture/source, but if you are not doing HD, don't worry about R0. F: is your render drive. This way, your editor can playback from source and render at the same time.
