Hard drive for laptop.

I have a friend that has an older hp n3350. It may be 3 years old or older, I am not sure. His hard drive is small and is totally full. He has put it over to xp which takes up a lot of the space but wants to keep xp because of all his programs. The hdd is 2.5". Will it take a special hdd or should any 2.5" work?

That depends on the BIOS, which is usually model specific. The HP n3350 should be able to handle any 2.5" drive up to 10 GB. It originally came with 5. Here are the specs:

If you put in a larger one, it will only "see" what the BIOS will allow it to see. You might check for a BIOS upgrade while you are at it.
