Hard Drive Flu?

Hey All

I need to know if I need a new hard drive.

My 80GB WD 800BB is very sensative when it comes to booting. At times the hard drive boots Win Xp and sometimes my MOBO DOESNT recognize it. My cables are secured well and I have enough power going into the computer.

My other WD 80GB 800JB is also very tempermental. It has a high pitch hissing sound, its not defeaning but it is slightly annoying and I can HEAR it when it SPINS DOWN.

I used WD Diagnostic tools to find any bad sectors and found none. So im stumped.

Is it time to throw away the HDs??

Give us a layout of the drives and configurations you have in your PC. For example what is connected to both IDE controllers (primary and secondary) and what are the jumper settings set to?

I would replace the hard drive that is making noise. SpinRite is a good program to have for hard drive diagnostic and recovery.

My Computer

P4 2.26GHZ
P4S533
512MB Samsung 2700 Ram
Primary Master: WD 80GB 800BB (Boot up Error)
Primary Slave: WD 80GB 800JB (Noise Maker)
Secondary Master: CD Rom
Secondary Slave: CDRW

The 800BB sometimes doesnt show up during CMOS which has WINXP installed on it and it says "cannot find boot disk" or "Please insert boot disk"

OK. I have seen this intermittently before.

Check your jumper settings on all 4 of these drives even if you think you know. Only mount and connect the Primary Master hard drive on master jumper settings to the IDE controller using an EIDE (80wire/40pin) cable. Then report back after booting several times consecutively.
