I have heard that the 7200 rpm fans run hot enought to require a fan. Where exactly is a fan to be mounted in the case so that it cools the HD? Considering that in most systems the floppy drive is right on top of the HD and there could be a second HD right below the first, I don't see where a fan could go...

You could put a fan on the side (if your case is big enough or the fan is mounted at the exterior of the chassis).

in general I've not had problems with 7200 rpm drives - if you use decent cases, you should be fine.

Now SCSI 10K rpm U-160 drives need cooling, but that's OK, 'cos Servers usually do have HDD cooling fans :).

You should be fine in most cases, unless you use cheapo components.
