Hard Drive Failure?

My laptop had been behaving very awful and slow at just about everything/crashing often.

I tried reinstalling windows but when trying to reformat, it wasn't able to. I was however able to successfully format one time and while doing the second part of the install (after the reboot) it was pretty much failing at writing every file. Also I remember it saying something on a lovely blue screen about an "unmountable boot disk".

Is this as simple as a damaged HDD? It's a 2 yr old HP laptop that i hate but wouldn't mind fixing it to just use to browse internet from couch.

That is hard drive failure for sure. You may be able to accomplish something along the lines of a low level format with the drive manufacturer's disk tools but more likely it is a rotational issue.
