One of my coworker's laptops failed with some fairly important stuff on there. His computer had just shutdown and upon turning it on again it said hard drive not found, try reseating it.

After sliding it in and out a few times, we tested it on a similar Dell, which didn't work. We also tried a SATA to USB converter, and while we can hear it spin up once it was powered on, the hard drive was not detected.

Are there any other options left? Or should we contact a data recovery service in hopes that they can recover the data on there?

If the data has value, your best bet at this point is a professional data recovery service. It's a hardware problem and there's not much to be done without specialize tools and knowledge.
