Ok, so I got the cover of my hard drive off and I can see the disks. How do I add additional disks to my hard drive so it will hold more data?

Urm.

Did I read this correctly? You sawed the cover off your HD? You want to add a few more platters?

This is either a spoof (I hope) or you've just done something really sutpid. It's really not worth it trying to MECHANICALLY add additional platters to a HD - short of you redisigning the interiors, swaping motors & all the additional stuff to go with it.

Just buy a new HD & stick that into your system.

Or - do you need help on how to add a 2nd HD into a working system?

It doesn't work that way bro. You need to buy seperate hard drives and add them to your computer. You better hope that you didn't ruin the hard drive you currently have.

Alternatively, donate to to a tekkie, so he can use it as demonstration material as to "what happens during a headcrash" :).

don' worry you all. All what he has asked for is to add some more platters so that it could hold more data. No problem. Just open a second hard drive, cut the desired number of platters with an axe and put them altogether using cello tape( but don't forget to use the kind of cello that allows you to write on it, because this is the way to allocate more data on your new drive).

LMAO :D

Additionally, You can do the same with floppy disks u know, just rip open the case, attached the round film disk into another floppy and it doubled the storage!!!!!!

*IF* he's removed the cover from his case, the chap needs some serious schooling in rephrasing his sentences. IMHO that is a clear indication of having sawn off the HDD cover.

Either way, I suppose we have to wait for Pederv to get back to us ...

Oh no!:Q Expensive frisbees! LOL! I once had a girlfriend say to me "Mike, while I was driving to work this morning, the "oil" light on the dashboard came on and stayed on; does that mean it's time to get the oil changed?"

Well, as long as he unscrewed the cover (not cut it off..metal dust is bad) and he hasn't touched the platters, I guess he can just put the cover back on and hopefully all will be well. Good luck, buddy.

Thanks for the replys!
This was an extension of a joke that another guy and I played on one of the other help desk techs here where I work. We were going thru old Compaqs trying to get enough parts to get 9 working systems that we could ship to a couple of our repair stations, when we decided to rip into a 750MB hard drive. Once he had it apart it was just a matter of who we were going to choose as our mark, so we chose the low man on the totem pole (the boss had too rough of a day).
We asked him to upgrade the hard drive and that one of the network guys had some spare platters for the upgrade.

Wasn't it a full moon last night? ;)

Oh come on guys, you don't need to add more platters. Just cut the head in half lengthways carefully. I suggest a sharp knife but my neighbour used an ax, and he says he has even seen it done with an chainsaw! (No way I'm that brave.)

Now the head is half the size, you've doubled the density. So much cheaper as long as you has a steady hand.

Alternativly, get all those credit cards you nolonger use, pull off the magnetic strips and stick them onto the AOL cd's you receive by the truck load each month. You might need to either trim the CD, or make a new housing out of cardboard for the larger disk size. Beware. If you do this, do a low level format to ensure the credit card information is properly erased or else it can be accessed by all the virusus out there looking for credit card numbers on peoples machines. (If you don't have access to a low level format tool, soak the magnetic strips in a strong solution of bleach and amonia for 72 hours prior to attaching to the CD to ensure they are properly cleaned.)

Hope this helps,

Moohoo

Just got into work and found out this little joke took on a life of it's own during the day (the other guy and myself, work the graveyard shift). My boss even got the director of worldwide IS support involved. Needless to say when our target found out that you can't upgrade a hard drive (after about 6 hours of research and work) by adding more platters, he wasn't too happy. But everyone else thought it was a great initiation, for the new guy! I'm told that they had to keep leaving the room because they couldn't keep a straight face.
