Hard drive errors

I was trying to partition my hard drive for linux using partition magic and it told me it had reboot in DOS to apply some changes the boot back to windows. Well it did something, then booted back to windows. When i got to windows i checked and there were no new partitions. I checked in partition magic and it said there were some errors on the drive. Well i asked around and heard that the errors would prevent it from partitioning. Well i tried a through scandisk to clear these up but scandisk stops responding at a certain point each time (DOS, and WIN98). Well since i cant fix these errors I cant seem to partition the drive. Can anyone direct me to an alternative to scandisk or another solution to this problem? Thnank you very much for any help.
