hard drive error scan

In Windows, I always use hdtune's error scan to check my hard drives for any bad sectors and possible signs of failure.

What is the equivalent in Linux?

I need to run this on a CentOS box (ClearOS Distro specifically). The box is my main Router, so I can't have it offline. I need the scan to run while the system is in use (or else I would just use a boot disc like Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test).

i am not doing preventative maintenance on the hard drive, i am doing preventative maintenance on the PC/Server. part of maintenance is trying to catch failing parts before they fail.

smart stats are fine, but i would like to perform a full sector error scan in linux. how? 😀

On a read-write mounted volume, essentially you don't. You can setup smartd to run scheduled SMART long and short tests and some filesystems let you run check while mounted, but in general that's pointless. You can't apply a Windows preventive maintenance plan to a non-Windows box.
