Also...

I was thinking about "possibly" (note quotes) including blank CD & DVD media deals in my weekly postings.

A couple of questions.

Anyone have any interest in seeing that info added? Or just stick to hard drives?
Any other poster have those deals covered regularily?

Lastly if I did decide to include this to my weekly postings, it would probably be a few weeks (December ish) before I stated to include it.

I think optical media prices are pretty competitive across retailers, and given the low price point, I know that I for one won't spend much time price shopping CD/DVD media.

But I do check out your weekly HD prices.

Can the Seagates be trusted? I think somebody recently made a post that said the 7200.8 models were defective.

Stick to hard disks. Media isn't worth the effort, given that the prices don't vary as much as drives.

Oh, and thanks for taking the time to post. Very helpful since I'm looking for an upgrade at some point. :)

media would be VERY hard to do in my opinion especially when you take into account the quality varies depending on who makes it and its definetly a YMMV situation. FJ's made in Japan are definetly worth 18-20 for a 50 pack while made in taiwan I would never pay that much.

edit: thanks for this post I check it every week, waiting for a good deal on a 400gb drive

Your retail HD posts are nice. What would be really nice is if you could include some online places, since for the most part, they are cheaper and have a longer warranty (OEM drives) than the retail versions.

Example: (newegg or zipzoomfly)
WD 320GB SATA for $120AR = ~.37/gig.
Maxtor Maxline III (5 year warranty) 300GB PATA for $125 = .42/gig
Maxtor diamodmax 10 (3 year warranty) 300GB PATA for $118 = .39/gig ...

As for HD reliability, it is *ALL* a crap shoot. They all fail sooner or later. I have seen drive from every manufactor fail. I also have some old drives that are >8 years old, and it hasn't failed yet, but a new one <1 year old failed.

I always appreciate your posts OP. I recommend you stick to hard drives only because I've taken on pro bono projects similar in scope and gotten burned out after a few weeks. Wouldn't want that to happen to you.

That said, didn't there used to be an automated thread like this either here or on FW?

No problems here except with Maxtor. Two 80GB Maxtor's have crapped out on me in 6 months to a year. And my third one (have had for less than 6 months) is starting to make clicking noises. Might be time to replace with one of those Seagates from Frys or Circuit.

FWIW -

 I absolutely appreciate the H/D price lists. I'd be interested in blank DVD if they're quality TY's. There are always junk brands on sale so that stuff wouldn't be news to me. Look forward to reading what you decide to do.

TigerDirect has a 300GB Seagate SATA HD with NCQ (7200x8, OEM) for $105 AR ($144.99-40=104.99). Shipping runs about $8. Just make sure you send in the rebate via certified mail :)

from a personal perspective all my maxtors have run fine. Alot of people have had different experiences. Problem is, seagate officially announced defects which is what's troubling.

PS, how is seagate with rebates anyway?

I bought a 200 GB Seagate after reading how quiet and reliable they are etc etc. I have to say I'm disappointed. Its noisy (compared to my 120 GB WD), slow and makes clicking noises all the time that makes me uncomfortable leaving anything important on it. Got a replacement and it has same issues. My preference is WD.
