I am running a 40gig Western Digital 7200 RPM in my computer as a slave. I store my business work on it. I am running a maxtor 40 gig as my primary for windows and programs.

The western digital suddenly started having problems. When I loaded windows it kept restarting and giving me blue screen errors, even while in safe mode. Windows XP now does a check upon boot up of all my drives. The Western digital drive gets this error "Corrupt master file table" CHDK Aborted.

I disconnected the Western Digital from the computer and the computer does not restart or get errors. I am not sure what to do, I really need to keep the information on the Western digital for work.

I just installed the Western Digital on another computer. And it still gives me the same error's. Is there anyway to reverse this?

You've just been bitten by WD. Western Digital drives aren't all that highly regarded in long-term reliability. Try to get all the stuff off that drive that you can. That's all you can really do at thiis point. Maxtor drives have pretty good records. I myself am going strong on an IBM Deskstar 60GXP (the one they made before they tried all that fancy hi-density stuff) and I like it. I have a case fan on it so it doesn't liquify from its own heat, though. That one gets hot, but not when there is a fan on it.

I have run every test available on the WD website and have not had 1 error. I would like to get as much info off the drive as possible, but i cant acess it at all. Th drive is not making any clicking noises or anthing like that.

Is it possible the problem could be caused by a boot sector virus? And if so how can I scan it since I cant acess the drive?

i dont think the drive is dead. boot sector virus = possible, but not likely i dont guess...

try to get your stuff off and format it. that is the best way to tell. after you format, if it is still having problems, then maybe i would RMA or something...

use the WD disk that comes with it and write zero's to it. that will completely erase EVERYTHING on the drive, and will probably be your best bet in determining if it just screwed up or if it is really f*cked up

What format do you use FAT or NTFS?

Have you tried to reinstall you're operating system?
