Hard drive dead or nearly dead?

I'm working on a computer for a friend. He says it just out-of-the-blue would not start up and would hang when he started to run scandisk. I noticed that the header which the HSF was plugged into had burnt out. The fan was not on, so I figured that it was a heat related problem. I decide to just wipe the drive clean and try to start over. I FDISK it and all seems fine. I try to format it and it hangs - saying that it is trying to recover an area of the hard drive. Are there any other utils i could use to try to format this drive? If I am able to install on the drive again, is it now destined to take a poop on me in the future?

The computer is a K6-2 500 and the HDD is a 10GB Maxtor. Please give some input besides "just go buy a new one". We are on a very tight budget 🙂

if its trying to recover sectors... that means it has bad sectors onthe drive... it sounds from the problems that your drive is going bad... whatever is wrong with the platter that has cause soem bad sectors is probably spreading and finally the whole platter will be unusable... id get a new drive, or get that one fixed if its still under warranty
