Hard drive cranking

I just bought a PC with a Hitachi SATA HD. The thing is always cranking. Like on for one second and off for one second like someone cranking a ratchet.

I had an IDE HD prior and never noticed this and it's driving me mad.

I disabled Windows Indexing Service and can't find anything running in the task manager that might coinside with the cranking noise.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

I will do that. But I don't think it is a drive failure of any sort. It sounds like it is accessing data when nothing is running. Can a service be causing this?

Ok. I stopped using the Linksys Utility for my wireless card and switched over to letting Windows handle the connection - and it stopped?

Whatever. As long as it stopped.
