hard drive corrupt/unreadable

summary - i have an old hard drive (on my mom's comp, must be 3-4 years old, maxtor) that is not accessible via my computer. when trying to explore i get the error along the lines of "corrupt and/or unreadable" and most recently 'drive is not formatted'

It's also not visible via windows disk degragmenter.

I have a clean installation of xp on a separate new hard drive, but i'd like to recover old outlook mailboxes, quickbooks profiles, etc. Any suggestions for a tool by which to accomplish this? Preferable freeware, but I would be willing to consider purchasing something.

Interestingly, this happened right after I tried changing the product key via the microsfot product key changer tool. So perhaps the file system is completely messed up. I've tried recovery counsel, fixboot, fixmbr, etc.

any and all thoughts appreciated - thanks!
