Hard Drive Copy Utility

Hey Guys,

I was hoping someone could refer me to software that will make a complete duplicate of one hard drive to another. I have 2 of the exact same hard drives, and I want to make one a exact duplicate of the other. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Dan

Ghost will do exactly that. Very good program.

I've been using Ghost for years - even before Symantec bought it. Slick program, offers lots of options for boot disks and even archives images to CD on its own. The only times I've had trouble copying a drive with it is if the drive is either failing or has file system problems.

And the free partitioning/transfer software that comes with HDs these days (or can be DLed free from the mfr's sites) usually works as well as anything. PowerQuest.com makes two products: Disk Image and DriveCopy. VCom (v-com.com) makes similar to PQ's.

Powerquest makes -0- products now as they are owned by Symantec

Yeah that's my problem...one drive is failing so I need to get what I can off of it and onto the replacement.

PQ > Symantec - well, that's not good news. I have little love for Symantec - hope they don't ruin PQ's babies...

Ok heres the deal...I looked at what you guys reccommended, but it doesn't seem to want to copy the drive verbatim. When I say verbatim, I mean I want all the partitions and everything copied exactly as they were. How do I do this? ASAP please, the computer is all apart!

Thanks a lot,
Dan

ghost or drive image ? or both? did you get either of them or are you just looking at a web sites about those programs.

Ghost is what I would use, fits on a floppy and if you do a drive to drive copy it gets the MBR aswell unlike many of the free HDD manufactures softwares

if your drive has bad sectors, you can go into the menus in ghost and tell it to keep copying if it encounters a read error. At least you will get whatever data is still intact.

Best of luck.

Data Lifeguard won't copy system files in use. :| Useless prog for duplicating a good Windows install....
I need Ghost myself. I'm in the same boat....

Acronis True Image, works with All OS's, from within windows or on boot, write to cd or dvd bootable or direct drive image copy with all system files whether in use or not. Will resize partitions if desired. Not buggy like ghost or powerquest. Acronis Partition Expert for straight drive duplication.

Yep. Acronis is the sh*t.

But if you have data on drive C and drive D, want to make a complete copy of drive C (including boot) but leave data on D intact, will it still do it?

No it doesn't. :| I just made an image and if I were to restore that image to my big, new drive it'll wipe out the partition (and everything in it!) Big warnings saying DON'T DO THIS IF YOU HAVE DATA, etc....

So TrueImage isn't the answer for me.
