Hard Drive Cooling Concern

I've been changing hard drives pretty often during the last few years, mainly because of defective units...just got a couple of new hard drives

Bought the following:

WD 74GB Raptor inside a Vantec Vortex Hard Drive Cooler

Seagate 80GB with NCQ with a Vantec Aluminum Hard Drive Cooler
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-888-105&depa=0

I have a dinosaur for a case, a 3dcool Tornado 1000.
Two intake fans on the side, one intake fan on the front, another intake fan on the back, big outake fan on the PSU.

My registered temp on the Vantec Vortex cooler "before closing the case" was 29C, after I closed the case, I jumped to 38C - 40C. I think that is getting on the hot side.

What am I doing wrong? what to improve?
What is the normal tomperature a hard drive should be running on?

Thanks for the help.

one HDD coolers blows air into the case, right? Using a ratcage fan as well i think. You have the equivilant of 3.5 80mm fans blowing in, and only 2 blowing out (unless PSU fan is 92 or 120, then it's a little more).

Either way, you've messed up the equilibria of airflow. Equal pressure enter, equal pressure exit. Since you have three fans blowing in, and only two blowing out, you're creating positive pressure in the case, not allowing all the hot air to leave at the same rate as it enters. Try venting one or both side fans out, not in. that'll lower case temps and help the HDDs a bit.

but the fact of the matter comes down to HDD coolers themselves. they just don't perform as well as you'd think they would do. In a comparison between front intake air cooled HDDs and ones in HDD coolers, the normal cooling actually works better by a few degrees C. no kidding. but if you want to keep the coolers, try removing or improving on the front grill on the vortex. restricted incoming air will not cool a HDD effectively. And i generally don't trust the other one (IMO)
