My HD clicks like mad when I run certain apps for ~5 seconds (WMP 9, which apparently "failed to install" somehow and now crashes my computer at will if I run it. Crash is reproducable with diff vid files, also). It also crashes randomly when I'm not using WMP9, usually with HD clicking.

This is the 2nd WD Caviar 80GB special ed. drive I've had and the first one had to be RMA'd because it died in a very similar way ;( click of death sucks ;(

I get 2 bluescreen errors while the HD is clicking. KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR, and also a STOP error 0x0000004F. I'm running Windows XP, fully updated. I have already done virus scans and spyware scans.

help ;(

back up your data now!...HD is prob dying. You might want to run mem-test for a few hours to rule out your ram.

My data is already backed up as I already thought it was dying, and I'll run memtest later. I'm about to run chkdsk. Thanks

If you have a multimeter, also do a quick check of your PSU's 12V and 5V voltages on a vacant 4-pin plug. Is it a quality brand of PSU, or is it so-so?

I don't have a multimeter, but my PSU is antec brand. I've had this HD for a year and a half without problems, and surprisingly I havent' had to remove or touch it in that year and a half so I doubt it's anything with the PSU.

I'm getting errors so I can't burn a cd with memtest because of "msvcp60.dll"

AIM is also giving me vbscript.dll errors. Should I just flatten and reinstall or will this not fix any of my problems?

It's clear, the drive is dying, your files are slowly becoming inaccesable. If you've got another HDD, you should install windows on the other drive and make your current drive the slave drive, transfer what ever over and then your done.

I built this machine a while back when I was actually in to building comps and stuff so I don't remember specifics like speed of the ram, but~

Mobo: Asus a7n8x non-deluxe
cpu: athlon xp 2700+
ram: 512 mb of kingston hyperx, it was too fast for my motherboard so its clocked down
hdd: 80 gb caviar special ed by western digital
vid: radeon 9700 pro, by atlantis, fanless :D
cd: lite-on 52x24x52x'

Do you think WD would let me RMa this drive before it actually breaks? I dont want it to completely fail on me during term paper season at school, that would really suck :(

Also, what voltage are you giving the HyperX? Tell me at least 2.7 volts :)

This probably won't help you, but I think you should know, I have never seen a hard drive that still worked over 2 weeks after then initial "clicks of death/doom".

The same thing happened to me last year. The drive was dead within a week. It definitely sounds like a hardware issue.

Test the drive with DataLifeGuard and you will probably receive an error code.
RMA the drive with this error code and WD will not give any problems with the RMA.
