I did a defrag on my secondary HD. Did a reboot and now XP does not recognize my second hard drive. When it boots the drive make a loud clicking noise.

I am pretty much convinced it is dead. I did a google search and saw some companies that did data recovery on dead HD's, could not find a price though. They all were call in for quotes.

Anyone have any experience with this? What price range am I looking at?

It is an older 30gb WD.

professional servies are VERY expensive with no guarantee of recovery, although their sucess rate is good.... (prices are probably 2 times the price of an on call plumber maybe? :p

some users here have reported that putting the drive in the freezer may give you enough time to recover the data (about 30mins to 1 hour before it dies again)
may be worth a shot to try

I had a similar experience but i was able to recover most of the data via a "trial version" of some of the more popular apps.

The professional services are usually very expensive.
