Hard Drive Choices

Hi,

I currently have a 36 mb Raptor HD and am thinking of getting another for peripheral programs, photos and possibly for the use of my computer as a PVR.

Raptors now come in three sizes: 36, 74 and 150mb.

There are, of course, many other choices, regarding manufacturers and sizes.

I'm looking for the best possible performance with an increase in capacity, yet for reasonable money.

I had originally thought of getting the 74 mb Raptor and using it as the boot drive and the 36 mb Raptor as the peripheral drive; this way, maximizing performance, but without maximizing storage space. This is one idea, but I?m not sure if it?s the best.

So, for those of you that are the technical wizards, I'd appreciate any and all suggestions!

thanks,

John

savvy,

what do you mean: "I think you mean the 36 gb?" Oh, do you mean itstead of "mb"? I see the mistake.

Yes, the 150 gb raptor would be the way to go, but it's still very expensive (here, in Canada, it's $300 cnd, almost as much as I paid for my new LCD display). The 75 gb, at half the size, is about half the money, as well (the more practical bang/buck choice, I think).

And, would you set the larger as master (boot drive) or slave?

Also, how much is enough for PVR use?

thanks,

John

How much do you want to be able to record? I don't know much about DVRs or PVRs but you need more then 150GB. Try a WD Caviar SE 250GB or 400GB on newegg, on is SATA I and one is SATA II.

dBTelos,

as a slave drive, would these drives diminish performance, given they're not as fast as a Raptor?

thanks,

John
