Hard drive choices & compatibility

I've been putting money aside for a new computer and am nearly ready to build one. Budgeting for around $2,000 CDN and I already have the monitor. I will add to this over time...

With a new build I am thinking SATA is the way to go with hard-drives. But my question is around what to do with my old ATA drives. I have 2 200 gig ATA drives that I would like to put into the new system. Can I do this if my main drive and other major storage drive(s) is SATA? I would likely swap these old (ATA) drives out once I got money to by new SATA, but for now I want to sink $ into everything but extra hard drives.

Simply, can you have SATA and ATA drives working in the same system?

Thanks

You can have both in the same system. I don't think you'll be able to use them in raid though. Is your optical drives going to be IDE? Because a lot of motherboards are only coming with one IDE port so you may need to buy a Hard drive controller card to get extra IDE connectors.

Alternatively you could make them into external drives.
