Hard Drive causing problems

I have a Maxtor 40gb hard drive and I believe enabling DMA causes the computer to freeze when accessing big files, playing some games, running disk defrag. I first noticed it when I was using win98 and installed 4in1 drivers, it would only freeze after i installed them. Then I upgraded to win2k and it does it even when I don't have the 4in1 drivers installed. I get a Blue Screen of Death in win2k that shows some code, mentions atapi.sys and memory dump.

Is there a way I can have DMA enabled and not be getting this problem? The only fix I found is to disable dma by changing Transfer Mode from Ultra DMA Mode to PIO Only. Doesnt this degrade system performance alot?

I have a ABIt Kt7 Raid Mobo
AMD 900 CPU
Maxtor 7200 40gb hard drive
