Hard drive: Can read one partition but not the other

So I tried booting my Dell laptop and it said "error loading operating system." I tried using the Vista CD to get into the recovery console but the CD would start loading but then got stuck at a black screen with a pointer arrow. I put the drive in an external enclosure and connected it to my desktop and I was able to read the Dell recovery partition, but for the main boot partition it said it wasn't formatted. Does anyone have any idea how I can go about trying to get my data of the boot partition?

The weird thing also is I got a replacement hard drive from Dell and when I put that in my laptop the Vista CD actually loads. Any idea why it wouldn't load with the damaged hard drive?
