I need a new harddrive because my laptop is shot with viruses and I need to reformat. I like the idea of having a hard drive that doesn't need a huge brick of a power supply so I am kinda looking at a portable one. I notice that they are all 5400rpm. Will I fall asleep using one of these? Is the 7200 to 5400 that big of a deal? The small ones come with like 120gb which I think is enough for me. I'll use it mostly just for music and movies, as I think running any games or stuff off of a external harddrive is a bad idea no?

I am looking at this one.

thoughts?

I mean I also have a old SATA harddrive from my desktop that died that I am not using. Would buying an enclosure for SATA and IDE be better?

Either of the drives in those cases is likely to be faster than the USB 2.0 interface allows anyway - I get a bit over 20MB/sec read. Doesn't your laptop have a firewire port? Then get an external drive with both interfaces. You'll get a little bit better speed out of FW for HDDS.

I agree with Zepper. And an external drive with a laptop is not a bad idea. It also sounds like you've made up your mind.

If I were you, and my laptop didn't have a 7200 RPM drive, I'd buy a 7200, swap it to the laptop, and buy an external case for the old drive.
